Plug 100A straight into a PCB

Sep 18, 2023Sep 18, 2023

Designed to be soldered through holes in a PCB, LF PowerBasket connectors from Wurth are dropped through holes and top-side-soldered to produce high current plug in and out connections using 3mm or 6mm diameter male pins.

The sockets can be used one at a time or, due 0.6mm positional tolerance, several contacts can be plugged in at the same time for board-to-board use.

Both solder-on and press-fit versions of the corresponding pins are available.

20°C to 150°C carrying capacity is 120A to 43A respectively for 3mm types and 164 to 55A for the 6mm version.

"The current carrying capacity needs to be seen in the context of the overall system," according to the company. "The transition resistance has an extremely low value with 250 – 350μΩ. Our measurementshave shown that the limiting factor usually lies in the PCB layout or in the connection of feed lines."

The alloy from which they are made (CuNiSiMg) allows them to be used at up to 170 °C for short periods.

They can be processed on conventional SMT lines and are soldered in a convection oven or vapour phase. They are supplied on a reel in ESD blister packaging, with a Kapton sticker option.

Manufacture is through punching and bending, and therefore without the need for Pb in the mix. On potential Pb content, Wurth said: "They are totally lead-free and RoHS compliant, and thus completely unaffected by expiring exemption 6c of the RoHS Directive."
