You Can Charge a Tesla At Any Power Outlet: Tesla Mobile Connector

Tesla Mobile Connector

Did you know that you can plug in your Tesla - or any electric vehicle that supports the Tesla charging standard, into a regular power outlet, and you will charge your car? This is just like plugging a phone power cord into a power outlet that charges a phone.

The Tesla mobile connector is how you do this. Simply take one end of the mobile connector and plug it into a power outlet. Then take the other end of the connector and plug it into your Tesla EV.

Tesla released a simple video demonstrating this recently, as I don't think most people realize that you can charge a Tesla using a standard power outlet. Most homes with a garage will have power outlets in the garage, which will allow you to charge your Tesla there.

Even better is if you charge your Tesla only at night, say from midnight to about 8 in the morning, you are going to pay a lot less for the electricity to charge your car than you would if you do it during the day.

Off-peak electricity costs are about 1/3 of what they are during the day during peak hours.

How Fast Does It Charge?

You might be wondering how much range you get with the mobile connector and if it is fast. Tesla answers this question with these answers:

With a 120 volt, 15 amp breaker, which is a standard power outlet for a garage or home, you will get a rate of charge per hour as follows:

* Model 3: 6 miles* Model S: 5 miles* Model X: 4 miles* Model Y: 5 miles

The good news is that if you need more range than that, you can get adapters up to 240 volts and get between 17 and 30 miles per hour of charge overnight, which will be more than plenty for most people.

For example, my Model 3 RWD would get about 48 miles of range each night while charging during off hours, and that would be more than enough for me. In fact, I'm thinking about getting a standard power outlet installed in my condo garage just so I can show how this works.

There you have it - you can charge a Tesla or any EV with a Tesla charge port using a standard power outlet. Would you get a Tesla knowing this information and that you could easily charge 32 to 48 miles of range very cheaply every night if you wanted to?
