Jul 16, 2023NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Graphics Cards May Not Be Restricted To 16
NVIDIA seems to have eased up on using the 16-pin connectors on the upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 cards with reports suggesting the use of standard 8-pin connectors.
In a surprising move, it was reported by IgorsLab earlier this evening that NVIDIA will not force any of their board partners to create versions of the GeForce RTX 4070 and 4060 graphics cards that are only meant to utilize the 16-pin 12VHPWR connectors and will be open to utilizing the standard 8-pin connector spec.
Wallossek reveals that his source states that there will be two variants of the RTX 4070 GPU, with several different options for board partners to use. Igor's lab states that overclocked GeForce RTX 4070 graphics cards with a 225W TBP or higher are likely to utilize the 16-Pin 12VHPWR connector. The second variant will be closer to the 200W reference design and will either include a single or a dual array of 8-pin connectors. VideoCardz was able to confirm the latter RTX 4070 option is void of the 12VHPWR connector but will be suited for overclocking.
Now it is very likely that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition variants retain the 16-pin connector but the entry-level custom designs utilize the standard single or dual 8-pin connectors.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Graphics Card "Rumored" Specifications
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 is expected to feature the AD104-250/251 GPU core. The GPU will feature 5888 CUDA cores, and 12 GB GDDR6X VRAM clocked at 21 Gbps, There seem to be three PCB boards designed for the GeForce RTX 4070 graphics cards, two of which we had pointed out last month and another one has been revealed by Kopite7kimi. Two of these are for the reference cards while one is for the Founders Edition as listed below:
Following is a comparison of all the known Ada GPU dies for desktop graphics cards. (Credits to MEGAsizeGPU/TechpowerUP GPU Database for the AD102/AD103/AD104 die shots).
The graphics card is expected to feature a 200W TGP which featured a 220W TGP so you're getting a 10% reduction in power. Also, another interesting thing to note is that the GeForce RTX 4070 core config is very similar to the RTX 3070 which also features 5888 cores but the successor houses the Ada GPU core which should not only bring extra performance but also higher efficiency. The card is also reportedly clocked at 1920 MHz base and 2475 MHz boost clocks which gives it just around 30 TFLOPs of compute power.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card is expected to launch next month around the 13th of April.
